1. Victoria Falls, Zambia
This name probably rings a bell or two and that should come as no surprise. Victoria Falls is arguably Africa’s most famous waterfall. The waterfall is known by the locals as “the smoke that thunders”. This is because the sound of the cascading water from the Zambezi River can be heard from 40 km away and the mist and spray rise up to 400 meters and can be seen from 50 km away.
Victoria Falls stretches for more than a kilometer and drops for more than a hundred meters making it the world’s largest fall.
2. Tugela Falls, South Africa
Africa’s tallest waterfall and the world’s second tallest, Tugela Falls is nestled in the Drakensberg Escarpment. Water from River Tugela drops in three breaks from a height of more than 900 meters and the best time for viewing is during the summer rainy season.
3. Maletsunyane Falls, Lesotho
With the impressive height of 192 meters, Maletsunyane Falls is Africa’s tallest single drop waterfall. It is an hours walk from Semokong. A remote town whose name translates to “site of smoke.”
4. Ouzoud Falls, Morocco
Ouzoud Falls is the tallest waterfall in Morocco and one of the most visited sites in the country. “The act of grinding grain” is the meaning of Ouzoud in Berber. The bottom of the fall is lined with olive trees and is simply beautiful.
5. Kalambo Falls, Zambia/Tanzania
Kalambo Falls is Africa’s second tallest uninterrupted waterfall. The waterfall is located on the border of Tanzania and Zambia. Kalambo Falls is also famous for its archaeological value as evidence of past civilizations dating as far back as 250,000 years is found at this site.
