Tapendoi Farm Guest House is part of a series of privately-owned homestay lodges under the management of Umbrella Tree Africa Ltd. The tagline on their website states “For the traveler, not the tourist”. This single line embodies their philosophy and their approach to accommodating guests. Rather than “a mass market package style safari lodge” Tapendoi offers a more homely and personal accommodation with the vibrant Daisy Shann as the lead host. In other words, Tapendoi is quite literally a home away from home and a hidden gem that should definitely be on your travel itinerary.
Nestled on the border of the Lolldaiga Ranch, Tapendoi seamlessly merges with the conservation area as there is no fence between the two. The guest house is one with nature as it offers a beautiful natural scenery graced bbyy a riverine forest, Lolldaiga Hills, and an array of exotic wildlife.
Accommodation
The main house has 5 bedrooms tailored to meet all of your accommodation needs. To start with, the master bedroom comes with a king size bed with a bathroom ensuite and an adjoining bedroom for the kids. The adjoining bedroom has a king size double bed and a cot. Yet another bedroom is furnished with a king size four post bed with a private bathroom across the corridor. The fourth bedroom has a queen size double bed with a cot and a shared bathroom across the corridor. Last but certainly not least, the fifth bedroom comes with a double bed and two single beds and a shared bathroom. Bedroom five is ideal for families with older kids.
That’s not all. Just a short walk from the main house are two permanent ensuite tents with electricity and plumbing. Both tents are quite spacious and can fit cots and beds for kids. The tents are ideal for privacy and the surrounding verandas perfect for yoga in such a natural setting.
Activities
Tapendoi’s exquisite accommodation is only half the story. There are lots of fun-filled activities to do. Firstly, easily gain entrance into the Lolldaiga Ranch that is adjacent to the guest house. Secondly, Tapendoi Farm Guest House is in close proximity to many conservations in the region such as Lewa, Borana, Mount Kenya, Ol Pejeta and El Karama, and the Ngare Ndare Forest. For such activities and more be sure to pre-arrange with the hosts for a smooth experience.
Hosts
So personal is the experience at Topendoi that one gets to know the hosts even before you arrive. Daisy and Roger Hurt are the main hosts and are extremely friendly and helpful. Teresa the cook, Mama Kuni, and Mama Jane are there at one’s service to ensure one lack’s for nothing.
